March 1945. Amamiya, an employee at the Radio Research Institute, becomes convinced of Japan's impending defeat due to inside information. He resigns immediately but finds himself pursued by the Special Higher Police—acting on behalf of the Home Ministry—who fear he might leak state secrets. One night, after spending time with a courtesan named O-Sayo, he is approached by a man named Noro—who suffers from impotence—with a strange request: to sleep with a woman known as "Madame Pearl" in his stead...
