In the 1970s, Japanese photographer Kenji Kawano began documenting the lives and culture of the Navajo Nation. A chance encounter with a Navajo Code Talker sparked his fascination with the remarkable history of this group of elite Navajo Marines. During his time on the Navajo Reservation, he met his wife, Ruth. For more than five decades, Kawano has dedicated his photography career to preserving the Code Talkers' enduring legacy.
