In Tang Dynasty China, poetry exams for officials drove young men to study. Zhu Yingtai, a scholar's daughter, disguised herself as a man to attend school. She befriended Liang Shanbo, sharing a dorm without revealing her identity. Forced into marriage, Liang died heartbroken. Zhu mourned at his grave, dying beside it. Their tale became legend.
