Die Sommerausstellung 2016 auf Schloss Ambras Innsbruck lässt tief in die Bedeutung und Geschichte des Spielens vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert blicken. Im Fokus steht das Moment der Herausforderung: das Spielen als Spannungsfeld von einem "Wettkampf" gegeneinander bei einem zugleich einvernehmlichen Miteinander. Kostbare Objekte, Gemälde, Spiele und historische Spielanleitungen sowie einige Überraschungen führen die Besucher ans Kulturgut Spiel vergangener Zeiten heran. Die Ausstellung präsentiert, ausgehend von der Sammlung Erzherzog Ferdinands II., exquisite Meisterwerke. Zu sehen sind rund 100 Objekte aus den Beständen des Kunsthistorischen Museums sowie internationale und nationale Leihgaben aus Privatbesitz sowie aus Kunstsammlungen, Museen und Bibliotheken.
