'Een bouwmeester bouwt niet' concludeerde de eerste Vlaams Bouwmeester Bob van Reeth bij zijn afscheid in 2005. In 1998 werd hij aangesteld om het tij te keren en het falende architectuurbeleid van de overheid weer op de rails te krijgen. Kwaliteitsvolle architectuur is een keuze van de opdrachtgever en de overheid moet haar voorbeeldrol opnemen, vond Van Reeth. Hij koos ervoor om niet te bouwen maar de opdrachtgever terzijde te staan. Als adviseur was Van Reeth een 'luis in de pels'. Zijn opvolger Marcel Smets koos in 2005 voor een andere weg: 'de cassis in de kir', zoals hij het zelf noemde. Inmiddels is Smets alweer vier jaar aan de slag.
