"The collections of the internationally renowned Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen owe their character to the taste of two men: Carl and Helge Jacobsen. Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, the great Danish brewing company, began collecting in the late 1870s, buying exceptional Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculpture as well as Danish paintings of the 'Golden Age' and works by nineteenth-century French sculptors, including Rodin and Carpeaux. After Carl's death in 1914 his son Helge extended the scope of the collection by adding Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, notably fine canvases and ceramics by Gauguin." "This catalogue of the Royal Academy's exhibition brings together some 200 of the most outstanding pieces, and contains essays on the history of the Glyptotek together with entries on each work, making this an important document of an exceptional collection."--BOOK JACKET.
